Desert Organic Cotton

This is the COTTON NOBODY TALKS ABOUT. But there was a time when European traders were crossing oceans to get to it. Imagine the year 1643. Europeans were wearing either linen or wool. It is funny that when they saw cotton for the first time, they called it "TREE WOOL". All this admiration, by the way, was for SHORT STAPLE INDIAN COTTON. They were fawning over indigenous varieties that have almost DISAPPEARED since.

300 years of the BRITISH EMPIRE changed the Indian cotton Industry completely. Under British rule, HANDLOOM weavers became PENNILESS while the ENGLISH MILLS THRIVED. Meanwhile, everybody became obsessed with LONG STAPLE COTTON (LSC). WHY? Because that’s the only variety the English mills could spin well. They convinced the world that LSC was the *DOG'S BOLLOCKS! But it's a THIRSTY CROP and it was never suited to the Indian soil or climate. That very obsession with LSC in today's date leads to failed crops and FARMER SUICIDES. NATIVE Indian varieties do so much better in the same soil. Like THIS ONE HERE.

This DESERT COTTON IS ORGANIC by default. It barely needs the protection of pesticides. It is HARDY and defends itself well. It also needs LITTLE WATER. That’s why it GROWS IN THE DESERT. It is the most SUSTAINABLE cotton Indian farmers can grow. Not just that, it also absorbs dyes well. It gets softer with age, and lasts longer than hybrid cotton.
